In response to the expiration of the California state rental assistance program on March 31, 2022, and the ensuing eviction crisis, CLA SoCal created remote opportunities for volunteers to help low-income residents of Orange and Los Angeles County avoid eviction or buy time to find housing. With the support of volunteer advocates, tenants can often have their cases dismissed, win at trial, or negotiate waivers of thousands of dollars of unpaid rent and avoid an eviction record that could make it difficult to find housing in the future.

To volunteer, please contact Monica Mar, Director of Pro Bono, at mmar@clsocal.org

Unlawful Detainer Answer Clinic Volunteer Opportunity For: Attorneys, Experienced Paralegals (bar waiters and non-CA attorneys also welcome)

    Opportunity Type: Remote Limited-Scope Clinic

Time Commitment: Approximately 3 hour shift

Clinic Schedule: Every Tuesday & Thursday, shifts at 9:30am; 10:30am; 1:30pm

Advocacy Skills: Client interview, drafting pleadings, advice, and counsel

Training: 50 Minute prerecorded training video Password: v0RPQ%0Q

Assist low-income tenants facing eviction during the pandemic by helping to prepare answers to Unlawful Detainer complaints in this remote clinic that takes place every week. Volunteers and clients “meet” via a conference call, and housing staff attorneys are available to provide real-time assistance in a video conference room for the duration of the clinic. Volunteers may elect to continue pro bono representation of the client in demurrer hearings, motions for summary judgment, and even trial – though there is no obligation to do so beyond the clinic.

LWDA is the cabinet-level agency responsible for a wide range of worker protections and programs in California, including wage and hour protections, health and safety protections, workforce development, and unemployment insurance.  The attorney must live in California (it’s open statewide – the posting says United States but it’s actually California) and be an active member of the California Bar, with at least 5 years of legal experience.  I am happy to answer questions about the position and the process.
