The Advisory Committee on Civil Jury Instructions has approved and posted its 27th release of proposed revisions to the civil instructions (CACI) for public comment. In response to developments in the law over the last six months, this release includes proposed new and revised instructions and verdict forms, and one proposed renumbered verdict form (CACI No. VF-405). We are very interested in your input. The proposed changes and additions are available for viewing on the internet at http://www.courts.ca.gov/policyadmin-invitationstocomment.htm. Only these currently proposed changes and additions are being submitted for comment at this time. We will gladly accept other comments, but the committee will not be able to consider them until the next release cycle. Our preferred way of receiving your comments is in a Word file attached to an e-mail sent to civiljuryinstructions@jud.ca.gov. However, you may also respond online. And we have also posted a comment form that you may use to comment on individual instruction or groups of instructions. The United States District Court for the Central District of California announces the appointment of Gail J. Standish as United States Magistrate Judge. Judge Standish, who was sworn in on April 13, 2015, will sit in Los Angeles in the Court’s Western Division. Before her selection as a Magistrate Judge, Judge Standish was a partner at Winston & Strawn LLP, where she concentrated her practice in patent litigation and other complex business disputes. She began her career at Irell & Manella LLP and also practiced at Gibson Dunn & Crutcher LLP. She was selected several times as one of California’s Top Intellectual Property Litigators and Top Women Litigators by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journals. She has been named an Angelino To Know In Intellectual Property Law by the L.A. Business Journal and ranked in the IAM Patent 1000 “World’s Leading Patent Practitioners.” Judge Standish served as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Central District of California, and as a law clerk for the late Judge William J. Rea. From her long career in government and private practice, she has extensive experience handling both civil and criminal trials.
In 1993, Judge Standish graduated from UCLA Law School, where she served as an Articles Editor of the UCLA Law Review and was elected to the Order of the Coif upon graduation. Before attending law school, Judge Standish was an engineer, having graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She served as an Air Force officer and Flight Test Engineer for the F-16 Falcon aircraft in the 1980s, and later worked on life sciences experiments that flew on the Space Shuttle. Including the position now occupied by Judge Standish, the Central District of California has 24 authorized full-time and one part-time Magistrate Judge positions.
