Happy April, OCWLA Members and Friends!

April arrives on the heels of a month defined by meaningful connection and action. March reminded us not only of our community's strength but also of the responsibility we carry as advocates and stewards of justice.

We began the month in celebration at our annual Wine Event, where OCWLA members and friends gathered in the spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose. The evening reflected the very best of our organization—bringing together accomplished professionals across generations to support one another and strengthen the bonds that sustain our work.

Our leadership was also proud to stand alongside fellow community leaders and advocates at the South Asian Bar Association of Orange County’s Community Leadership Gathering. The collaboration and unity on display reinforced what we know to be true: progress in the legal profession—and in our communities—occurs when we intentionally and respectfully show up for one another.

At the same time, this month has been fraught with challenges. As conflicts continue to affect communities across the globe, many within our own legal community are carrying personal grief, concern, and uncertainty. OCWLA remains committed to holding space for those impacted—offering support and solidarity. In moments such as these, we are reminded that the practice of law is it is grounded in it.

We were also honored to join the Iranian American Bar Association for its Nowruz gathering. While Nowruz is traditionally a time of celebration, this year’s gathering carried a more reflective and contemplative tone. In recognition of the challenges quietly affecting many with the community, the event created space to come together, share in mutual understanding, and offer support. It served as a meaningful reminder that community remains a source of strength, even in difficult moments.

That same spirit of civic engagement was reflected in OCWLA’s participation in the Great American Write-In. Through our presence, we supported meaningful dialogue, encouraged direct advocacy, and helped make civic participation accessible to those seeking to engage with the democratic process. I extend my sincere thanks to Maria Bashaw for her leadership and dedication in staffing our OCWLA booth—her efforts were instrumental in advancing this important initiative.

We concluded March with a special opportunity to honor service, community. In recognition of the anniversary marking the end of the Vietnam War, veteran advocates gathered for a luncheon with Judge Carter, Judge King, and Justice Moore. The event offered a moment of remembrance and underscored the vital role advocates play in supporting service members. Attendees also experienced a guided tour of the appellate courthouse artwork, highlighting the intersection of history, justice, and the enduring legacy of service.

As we transition out of Women’s History Month, we carry forward its message with purpose. Our upcoming Equal Pay Day CLE will provide an important opportunity to examine the persistent disparities that continue to affect women in the workforce and to equip ourselves with the tools to addressthese disparaties. While we celebrate progress, we remain clear-eyed about the work that still lies ahead.

April is often associated with renewal—a season of growth, and possibility, It offers us a moment to recalibrate and recommit. My hope is that we continue to build on the energy of the past month: to lead with integrity, to advocate with intention, and to support one another with generosity. In doing so, we reaffirm our shared commitment to the rule of law—the foundation upon which our profession stands and the principle that guides our work in service to others.

March arrives with a sense of momentum and purpose. As we move into the heart of this year, I continue to be inspired by this community's strength and the shared commitment that has defined Orange County Women Lawyers Association for the past 50 years. Your engagement, leadership, and generosity transform our mission into meaningful action. In February, we joyfully came together for our annual Galentine’s celebration, a reminder of the power of connection, friendship, and the supportive network that defines OCWLA. We were also proud to partner with the OCBA Attorney Well-Being Committee and other bar sections to present High Stakes, Heavy Hearts—a meaningful and timely conversation focused on protecting your well-being while continuing to succeed in a high-pressure profession.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we are reminded that the story of women in the law is one of courage, persistence, and collective progress—written across courtrooms and communities around the world. We stand on the shoulders of women pioneers who transformed what once seemed impossible into lasting pathways for others: Arabella Mansfield, the first woman admitted to practice law in the United States; Charlotte E. Ray, the first Black woman lawyer in our nation; Sandra Day O’Connor, who shattered the highest glass ceiling as the first woman on the United States Supreme Court; and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, whose lifelong advocacy reshaped the legal framework for gender equality. Closer to home, that same trailblazing spirit is reflected in Orange County through leaders such as Judge Frances Muñoz, the first Latina appointed to the Orange County Superior Court, and Justice Eileen C. Moore, one of the earliest women to serve on the Fourth District Court of Appeal, Division Three, whose distinguished career and national leadership continue to inspire our legal community.

Other transformative women were the founders of OCWLA, who, at a time when women were significantly underrepresented in the profession, created one of the first sustained and intentional networks in Orange County dedicated to advancing women lawyers through mentorship, professional development, judicial access, and community impact. Their vision established more than an organization, OCWLA is a lasting infrastructure of opportunity and support, which continues to shape careers and open doors more than five decades later.

That same spirit lives on today in the women who serve on the bench, lead our legal institutions, and guide the next generation forward. When we come together across generations to share our experiences and honor those who paved the way, we are reminded that this legacy is both global in its impact and deeply personal in its meaning—something we will celebrate in a particularly special way at our cherished Past Presidents’ Tea. Because of them, we lead. Because we lead, the next chapter begins.

In the months ahead, our programming offers powerful opportunities to come together in that same spirit of connection and advancement. On April 21st, we will host our Equal Pay Day CLE, a timely and important program that reinforces OCWLA’s longstanding commitment to education, advocacy, and equity in the profession. There are countless opportunities to get involved. I encourage each of you to find a space to plug in, bring a colleague, and help us grow this extraordinary network. OCWLA has always been an organization where leadership is cultivated, friendships are formed, and futures are shaped.

It is an honor to serve as your President during this remarkable chapter in our history. Thank you for your leadership, your engagement, and your unwavering commitment to one another and to the mission of OCWLA. Together, we are not only celebrating our past—we are shaping a powerful and inclusive future.

As we move into February, I am energized by the momentum already underway and grateful for the collective commitment that continues to shape OCWLA’s year ahead. The new year began on a strong note with our January 13 CLE, which was exceptionally well attended and thoughtfully received. The program reflected the caliber of education our members expect—substantive, timely, and engaging—and set the tone for the quality of programming we will continue to deliver throughout the year.

Building on that momentum, the Board recently convened for our annual retreat, an important opportunity to reflect, collaborate, and plan with intention. During the retreat, Board members evaluated prior initiatives and engaged in strategic discussions focused on how to best serve our community. The result is a thoughtfully curated slate of educational programs, networking opportunities, and signature events designed to foster professional growth, connection, and leadership development in the months ahead.

In January, the OCWLA Foundation also met to review applications for bar stipends, continuing our commitment to supporting aspiring and early-career attorneys. This year, the Foundation anticipates awarding five bar stipends, reflecting OCWLA’s ongoing investment in access to the profession and equity within the legal community. We are grateful to the Foundation Board and volunteers who dedicate their time to this important work.

Philanthropy remains a core part of OCWLA’s mission, and there will be several opportunities in the coming months for members to engage, give back, and support our community partners. We invite you to participate in these efforts and will be sharing additional information soon.

Please help spread the word! OCWLA is currently accepting applications for its philanthropic giving! Applications are due by February 28, 2026.

At the heart of all of this work is OCWLA’s enduring mission: to advance women in the legal profession, promote equity within the justice system, and strengthen our legal community. That mission remains our north star. Whether through CLEs, signature events, philanthropic initiatives, or informal opportunities to connect, OCWLA will continue to hold space for meaningful engagement while ensuring that our work remains inclusive, relevant, and lasting.

February also offers a moment to reflect on important historical milestones that underscore why this mission matters. The month includes the birthdays of trailblazing advocates such as Susan B. Anthony and Rosa Parks—leaders whose courage and perseverance reshaped our understanding of equality, civic participation, and justice. Their legacies remind us that progress is the result of sustained effort and collective action.

Within the legal profession, February likewise invites reflection on the role attorneys play in protecting civil rights, advancing access to justice, and upholding the rule of law. These principles are deeply aligned with OCWLA’s purpose and inform our continued commitment to service—both within the profession and in the broader community.

As we look ahead, I encourage you to stay engaged, attend upcoming programs, and take advantage of the many opportunities OCWLA offers to connect and lead. The strength of this organization has always come from its members, and the year ahead promises meaningful opportunities to build on our legacy together.

As we step into 2026, I am filled with gratitude for the incredible legacy that the Orange County Women Lawyers Association has built for more than five decades — a legacy grounded in empowerment, connection, and the advancement of women in the legal profession. This year, we continue that legacy with renewed purpose, strengthening the spaces where women lead, learn, and uplift one another.

OCWLA remains committed to offering high-quality, meaningful CLE programs throughout the year, ensuring our members stay informed, supported, and inspired in every stage of their careers. I encourage you to join us for these educational opportunities as we deepen our collective knowledge and continue shaping the future of our profession.

We also have an exciting calendar of events ahead! Please save the date for the 2026 OCWLA Gala on October 15, an evening dedicated to celebrating our mission and honoring those who embody and carry on these values.

In addition, we look forward to hosting hallmark events including the Annual Women Judges Reception, Quarterly Coffee Meet Ups, the Past Presidents’ Tea, our Summer Membership Mixer, and the Holiday Installation Dinner. Each gathering provides a unique chance to build community, recognize leadership, and connect with colleagues who share a commitment to equity and service.

Philanthropy remains a cornerstone of our work, and this year brings even more opportunities to support organizations that uplift women, children, and families across Orange County. I invite each of you to engage in our charitable initiatives as we continue to make a meaningful impact together.

As we begin this new year, let us move forward with confidence, compassion, and the courage to expand the path for others to follow. Together, we will continue strengthening OCWLA’s legacy of empowerment, in shaping a brighter, more inclusive future for our legal community.

It has been such a privilege to serve as your 2025 OCWLA President, and I am so grateful for all the people who worked this year to bring so many programs, events and networking opportunities to life. Thank you to our generous sponsors, without whom none of our events would be possible. And thank you to the people who volunteer their time and treasure to making this happen: our executive directors, Amelia Montgomery and Tori Menninger, and to our incredible 2025 Board of Directors who worked so hard this year. It has been such an honor and pleasure to work alongside you all in support of this great organization.

Update My Member Information

Our big goals for the year were to expand our “tent” through reaching new attendees and members, expanding opportunities for philanthropic work, and expanding opportunities for members to have their voices heard through advocacy. Our board, executive directors and members realized these goals.

Expanding our Reach

Thanks to membership chairs Laurie Rowen and Mimi Ahn, and past OCWLA President Dana Heyde’s popular OCWLA book club (now ten years old!) our membership over the last two years has grown from 400 members, to over 600 members.

Heidi Plummer and the new judicial evaluation committee expanded inclusivity and OCWLA’s reach with the addition of a judicial evaluation committee and support for the Unity Bar.

Heidi also led the Events Committee who put on this year’s extraordinary Gala, the Wine Event, the Past Presidents Tea, the Women Judge’s Reception and the Holiday Dinner.

Sayuri Espinosa and Antoinette Naddour expanded our reach with MCLE programming featuring dynamic speakers and new subject areas. New programs also included our Professional Tool Kit series, offering members professional headshots, a presentation from marketing and branding experts, and a shopping networking event at the Veronica Beard store.

Finally, past president Betty Fracisco led a team of board members to reconnect with past leaders of OCWLA in a history project documenting the last 50 years.

Philanthropy

Our incredible Philanthropy Committee, led by Heather Stangle-Smith and Ashley Peniche Montenegro, organized hands-on opportunities for members to participate in philanthropic activities while gaining legal experience. Ashley met early in the year with the Orangewood Foundation and organized an OCWLA event to make dinner for homeless teens. OCWLA sponsored a CRF judging night, and “adopted” a conservatorship clinic with the Elder and Disability Rights Center. Our monthly updates now feature volunteering opportunities where members can also gain legal experience.

Advocacy

Another 2025 goal was to provide opportunities for members to get involved in their communities and support issues they cared about. In light of attacks on lawyers, law firms and judges, our board was among the first in Orange County to draft and endorse a statement supporting the Rule of Law. We also sponsored a table at the Great American Write In, in which 100 organizations participated, and sponsored our first annual Suffragette Coffee, to support voting rights.

I am also grateful for those who model the mission of our organization. Our incredible 2025 Awardees are shining examples of OCWLA’s support for civility, for support for women in the profession and the rule of law. Pamela Traut, Judge Kimberly Menninger and Everett Dorey all have contributed and continue to contribute to a legal community where woman lawyers thrive. Thank you again for the privilege to serve as the 2025 OCWLA President, and congratulations to the incoming 2026 Officers and Board of Directors!

Thanks to all of you who supported and attended our 50th Anniversary Golden Legacy Gala at the VEA Hotel on October 16! Gala Chair and OCWLA Vice President Heidi Plummer did a fantastic job making sure every detail of the evening was perfect. I was particularly moved by the acceptance speeches by our incredible honorees. Thank you, Pamela Traut, for normalizing support for the Rule of Law. Thank you, Judge Kimberly Menninger, for reminding us how important it is to support other women lawyers and for how far we have come. Finally, thank you, Samantha Dorey, for highlighting the important work you do at Everett & Dorey LLP to support and uplift women lawyers.

Update My Member Information

We had other memorable events in October. First, on October 9, OCWLA members, friends and clients visited the Veronica Beard store in Fashion Island to network, shop and enjoy champagne and soft drinks while shopping for fall and winter fashion. A women owned-brand, Veronica Beard donated 15% of the evening’s proceeds to Orange County Women Lawyers Association Foundation to support bar stipends and grants to charities supporting women and children in Orange County. We are so grateful to Desiree Salazar and the entire team at the Veronica Beard Newport Beach store for organizing this great event and for supporting the OCWLA Foundation.

On October 25, OCWLA was out in force to support the newest fantastic program rolled out by OCBA President Mei Tsang, the OCBA Community Fair. The event featured incredible talent by our own legal community, children’s activities and face painting. The OCWLA had its own table at the event. This will surely be a highly anticipated annual event for years to come.

In honor of Halloween, the OCWLA Book Club gathered on October 27 to discuss the book Night Bitch by Rachel Yoder. The discussion was led by Marketa Sims. Stay tuned for more details, as the OCWLA Members-Only Book Club will be celebrating its tenth anniversary of lasting connections and friendships with its First Annual Book Club Gala on January 23, 2026. Non-Members are welcome. It's sure to be a fun event!

For our last October event, Membership Committee Co-Chairs Laurie Rowen and Mimi Ahn put on another extraordinary member coffee meetup. Generously sponsored by Cottle Keen Lopiccolo & Heyde, LLP, and Silvana Sarkis, JD, the meetup was particularly festive and well-attended, and included some fantastic and creative costumes, including “A Formal Apology,” “Miss Demeanor,” and “Miss Trial.” Special thanks to Nico Johnson and Lexitas for hosting the event at his location.

This month has more events in store. On November 7 we are hosting our last MCLE of the Year, Elimination of Bias MCLE: Breaking The Mold, featuring Manal Richa. The luncheon will be at the OCBA Headquarters from 12-1:15. We will also be announcing the results of our recent election and our new OCWLA 2026 Board of Directors!

We are continuing to support group philanthropic events with an OCWLA CRF Moot Court Judging night on November 18. Please register here if you would like to attend.

My friends and former colleagues from OCDA, Matt Murphy and Heather Brown, gave the inside story of the twists and turns of the People v. Hossein Nayeri case. We are grateful to Matt and Heather for making the time to give this great presentation. Also coming up this month is our members-only book club on September 29 at Mimi’s Café in Tustin. OCWLA Past President and current Board Member Dana Heyde will lead the discussion on Mansion Beach by Meg Mitchell Moore.

We have worked with professionals this year to help our members to hone their personal brand and marketing message. Our final event in the professional tool kit series will be generously hosted by the Veronica Beard store in Fashion Island. Members can register to attend this private shopping experience with a friend or client, and the store has graciously agreed to donate 15% of the proceeds to the OCWLA Foundation. Don’t miss this great opportunity to support the OCWLA Foundation, update your wardrobe and network with colleagues and clients. The event will be on October 9 from 4-7 pm.

On August 8, OCWLA members gathered at the Buchalter law firm in Irvine to hear from Outlier Creative partner Lora Brown about personal branding and marketing. The presentation included tips about how to create a LinkedIn profile and craft your social media for maximum professional impact. Stay tuned for news on the third event in the toolkit series coming this Fall.

Be sure to register for one of our most popular annual events, the Women Judges Reception, on August 21st at the Boardwalk in Irvine. The evening event provides a wonderful opportunity to meet and mingle with local bench officers, and celebrates the very accomplished women judges of Orange County.

Also coming up this month is our Suffragette Coffee, from 8-10 am on August 26th at Lexitas in Irvine. Our suffragette sisters had to fight for the passage of the 19th Amendment, ratified in 1920. Learn about recent legal issues related to voting rights while catching up with friends and colleagues at another of our popular coffees.

Our OCWLA Members-Only book club will be meeting this month on August 25 to discuss the book Upgrade by Blake Crouch. Allen Bourgeois of Verus Forensic, and Denetta Scott of Mortenson Taggart Adams LLP will be leading the discussion at Mimi’s in Tustin.

Finally, as a reminder, we will be celebrating our incredible 2025 OCWLA awardees, Pamela Traut, Judge Kimberly Menninger and Everett Dorey, LLP, at our annual OCWLA Gala, where this year we also mark the 50th anniversary of the organization! Happy July to all our members!

I am happy to report that OCWLA has hit an all-time high in membership of 631 members. On August 8, two marketing specialists from powerhouse legal marketing firm Outlier Creative will join a small group (this will sell out, so register today!) to highlight best practices for marketing your legal skills. The Buchalter law firm will generously be hosting this event. Following the presentation the speakers will have individual short meetings with attendees to address questions about professional social media profiles and/or resumes. This is the second event in our Professional Tool Kit series, to help members maximize their career potential.

Suffrage Day is August 26th. We will be hosting an OCWLA coffee meet-up to celebrate our sisters who made voting and advocacy possible for American women. Look for more information in your email soon.

We will also be hosting a special MCLE luncheon on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Pacific Club. OCDA Prosecutor turned ABC Legal Commentator Matt Murphy will join former OCDA Homicide Prosecutor Heather Brown to discuss their prosecution of the infamous Hossein Nayeri. Both attorneys were featured in the recent Hulu documentary, “Devil in the Desert,” and in the ABC podcast of the same name which recently became the number one podcast in the country. Don’t miss this great MCLE!

Over 100 attendees connected with friends and colleagues and enjoyed delicious food and drinks. The OCWLA book club met on May 19, led by Maria Bashaw of Maldonado Bashaw Law, to discuss the novel “James” by Percival Everett.

We had an usually large and accomplished group of nominees this year, in every category, and it was challenging for our Awards Committee to select a single nominee from so many outstanding candidates. We rang in the month of May with a Spring Membership Coffee Meetup, hosted by Lexitas at their Irvine location on May 2. We are very grateful to Cottle Keen Lopiccolo & Heyde, Silvana Sarkis, and Lexitas for their ongoing support of OCWLA.

On Wednesday, May 9th, OCWLA hosted another MCLE at the Park Club, featuring speakers Natalie Stephan and William Curry of Whitney | Petchul on the The Secret Inner Workings of HOAs. The speakers fostered a lively discussion about a variety of issues homeowners face with HOAs.

Upcoming events include our May OCWLA Book Club meeting on Monday, May 19, 2025 at 5:30 p.m. at Mimi’s Café in Tustin. Maria Bashaw will lead the discussion on “James,” by Percival Everett. Our Summer Membership Mixer, which OCWLA co-hosts with the OCWLA Foundation, is coming up on June11, and it will be held again at Zov’s Bistro in Tustin. This evening event is a great opportunity to network with your colleagues and make new connections.

Mark your calendars for some important upcoming events! Our Annual Women Judge’s Receptionis coming up on Thursday, August 21 at Boardwalk Courtyard in Irvine. We will celebrate our “Golden Legacy” of 50 years as an organization at our Annual Gala on October 16 at the VEA in Newport Beach. We will be celebrating our annual award winners with the theme “Empowered for 50 Years, Inspired for the Future."

We had a busy January that included our board retreat, hosted by board member and 2025 OCBA President Elect Shirin Forootan. We worked together on our plans for the year and bonded over a line dancing lesson at Shirin’s beautiful home. On January 29, we hosted the first event in our Professional Tool Kit series, featuring headshots by professional photographer Erin Kaiulani of Erin Kaiulani Photo. The OCWLA was honored to support female make-up artists, hair stylists and jewelry vendors from across Orange County, and to provide our members with an opportunity to connect and leave with a great headshot. We are particularly grateful to Richard Stevens, Christine Barsotti, and Cindy Samarin at Stevens & Cross Cosmetics in Newport Beach for being such accommodating and gracious hosts for the event.

We had two fantastic events in February. On Valentine’s Day, members, new members, law students, and OCBA's Mommy Esquire members convened to celebrate, share breakfast and connect with one another at our annual "Galentine’s Day" Coffee Meetup. Special thanks to Nico Johnson at Lexitas for hosting the event at his office, and to Silvana Sarkis, JD, and board member/membership co-chair Laurie Rowen of Montage Legal Group for their sponsorships.

On February 18, at our first MCLE of the year, we were honored to hear from Justice Shama Hakim Mesiwala about historic women on the court of appeal, along with California Judicial Appointments Secretary Adam Hofmann, the Honorable Tania Vallejo and Justice Eileen Moore.

The month of March will also not disappoint. On March 4th, we are hosting our annual Wine Event. This year’s theme is Mardi Gras. On March 24, our vibrant OCWLA Book Club, led this month by Martha Patterson of Geisler Patterson Law, will convene to discuss “The Women,” by Kristin Hannah. On March 28, OCWLA Past President Kelly Galligan will be presenting a 1 hour Technology MCLE with Michael Hellbusch of Rutan and Tucker LLP on leveraging Artificial Intelligence in your practice.

As part of this year’s effort to connect members to community advocacy opportunities, the OCWLA is participating in the Great American Write In on March 29th. At this annual event, different community organizations gather to offer opportunities to help people connect with local, state and federal representatives. OCWLA will have its own booth and work to connect members and the public to causes that are important to them, including those affecting women and children. As a reminder, Orange County Women Lawyers Association invites you to submit your nominations for our 2025 Awards, to be presented at the 2025 OCWLA Annual Gala. Dear OCWLA Members,

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your 2025 Orange County Women Lawyers Association President. We begin this momentous year of our 50th anniversary with heavy hearts as we grieve with our Los Angeles County neighbors in the wake of the catastrophic wildfires. Our thoughts are with our members and neighbors who are suffering incredible loss right now.

As I mentioned at our installation dinner in December, one of our goals this year is to provide tangible opportunities for our community to support one another. We have listed on our website some ways we can support the fire victims and first responders.

Goals for our fiftieth anniversary year include:

Offering advocacy and policy training for lawyers interested in advocating for women’s issues, locally and globally;
Continuing to support our affiliate partners including the Unity Bar to support diversity on the Orange County Superior Court bench;
Strengthening connections and networking opportunities for women in business and women lawyers through joint events; and
Continuing to offer groundbreaking, one of a kind MCLE’s, and wonderful events like our gala and women judges reception.

This month, we will be offering the first in a “Professional Tool Kit” series. On January 29^th, we will be hosting a photographer to take professional headshots for registrants. Hair and makeup touchups will also be available. Our first MCLE of the year, Celebrating Seven Historic Female Firsts on California’s Courts of Appeal will be on February 18^th.

As I write my last message as OCWLA President, I reflect on what has been a truly amazing year for this organization. It has been an honor to lead this inspiring group of professionals who continue to break barriers, advocate for justice, and support one another in our legal community. I am proud of all that we have accomplished together. From hosting impactful events and professional development opportunities, to creating a space where we can all lift each other up, we have truly made a difference. I am grateful for the camaraderie and the spirit of collaboration that define this organization, and for the ways we’ve shown resilience in facing challenges.

A big thanks to all who attended and supported our Installation Dinner & Holiday Celebration at the Fairmont Newport Beach on December 5. Special kudos go to Tracy Hughes, who planned this spectacular event, and Heidi Plummer, whose snow machines and invaluable contributions made for the perfect kickoff to the holiday season. Thanks also to the Honorable Sheila Hanson, the newly-elected Assistant Presiding Judge of the Orange County Superior Court, for her inspiring words and for swearing in the OCWLA Board and the Foundation Board.

I hope you are all enjoying your last few weeks of summer. Thank you to everyone who attended our amazing Women Judges Reception on August 29, where we celebrated the Honorable Elizabeth G. Macias as the recipient of the 2024 California Women Lawyers Joan Dempsey Klein Distinguished Jurist Award. We were honored to have 33 judges in attendance, an OCWLA record! One of the missions of the OCWLA is the advancement of women on the bench. Women still only make up 35% of the superior court bench in Orange County. The California statewide percentage of women judges on the superior court bench is 41.2%. The 4th District Court of Appeal has 31.8% women justices and the statewide percentage of women justices on the Courts of Appeal is 43.3%. The California Supreme Court is 57.1% women. While women have made substantial progress on the bench here in California and in Orange County, there is still much progress to be made. The OCWLA thanks the women judges who have helped advance women on the bench and within the legal profession, and thanks the many people who have supported them along the way.

Believe it or not, our Annual Gala at the VEA Newport Beach is just five weeks away! I am pleased to announce that we have already sold 219 out of 300 tickets to this event and will sell out soon. Sponsorships are still available. If you haven’t purchased your tickets and/or sponsorship, pleaseregister online or contact info@ocwla.org. I hope everyone is having a wonderful summer! We had a great July, starting with our Past Presidents’ Tea at the beautiful Morning Lavender Café in Tustin. We honored our OCWLA Past Presidents, including the following Past Presidents in attendance: Betty Fracisco, Allyson Thompson, Michelle Philo, Kelly Galligan and Jessica Munk. Also in attendance was founding member, Mark Edwards. We also hosted an extremely well-attended MCLE/Book Club, featuring the book Passion in Black by Justice Timothy Buckley, Retired Associate Justice, Court of Appeal, Fifth District. We had the privilege of Justice Buckley there in person to lead the discussion!

We are looking forward to our Women Judges’ Reception on Thursday, August 29th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Boardwalk Courtyard in Irvine. We are expecting a big crowd at this event, where we celebrate our women judges and all of our judicial officers. This year, we will also be recognizing the Honorable Elizabeth G. I hope everyone had a festive July 4th! It was great starting the month with a day off and warm summer weather. Thank you to the more than 100 people who attended our Summer Membership Mixer at Zov’s on June 18. We raised over $1,000 for the OCWLA Foundation from our raffle, and our winners, Hillary Willett and Michael Balmages very generously donated their prizes back to the Foundation for our Gala silent auction.

We have some wonderful events coming up this summer. On Saturday, July 27, we will be hosting our Past Presidents’ Tea for members only at the beautiful Morning Lavender Café in Tustin. All members are welcome (not just past presidents), and limited spaces are still available. Please join us for delicious tea, scones, sandwiches and desserts as we celebrate our OCWLA past presidents.

The Spring flowers were out in full force at our May 1 free coffee meetup, co-hosted with the Hispanic Bar Association! We had a record turnout at this event, with 100 RSVPs. Thank you to those who attended, and to the HBA for being such wonderful co-hosts.

On April 26, we hosted our annual Equal Pay Day Program, featuring an esteemed panel moderated by Board Member Janani Rana and featuring the Honorable Juliet Macaulay, the Honorable Tania Vallejo and Professor Andrew Penner of UCI. To commemorate the occasion, the group took our traditional Equal Pay Day photo (below). I'm proud to lead an organization that lifts up women and strives towards closing the gender pay gap.

On April 29, the Book Club met and discussed Spare, Prince Harry’s autobiography. Our attendees had a lot of fun with the theme!

This month, we are proud co-sponsors of the May 9 program: Path to the Bench - Overview of the Judicial Application Process and Insights From Current Judges, hosted by the OCBA DEI Committee.

I cannot believe it is already April! March flew by, but was very fun and eventful for the OCWLA. On March 22, we hosted an inspiring and informative MCLE, Breaking the Glass Ceiling, with two trailblazing speakers, the Honorable Kimberly Menninger and OC Supervisor Katrina Foley. On March 26, we held our Annual Wine Tasting event at an elegant new venue, the Park Club. This event sold out…twice! We had an amazing presentation by the wonderful Alexa Zabat-Fran, a wine expert, and networked over delicious food and wine. Last, but not least, several OCWLA members attended Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley’s Third Annual Women Making A Difference Awards on March 30, where the OCWLA was honored as the Organization of the Year! Board Member Jessica Munk was honored as Criminal Attorney of the Year and Board Member Amber Poston was honored as Public Defender of the Year! Bravo, ladies!

On April 26, the OCWLA will present our Annual Equal Pay Day: Equal Pay & Closing The Dream Gap (specialty MCLE credit offered). While Equal Pay Day for all women on average this year was March 12, Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is July 9, Latina Equal Pay Day is October 3, and Native and Indigenous Women’s Equal Pay Day is November 21 (source: https://www.aauw.org/resources/article/equal-pay-day-calendar/). We are so excited to hear from our esteemed panel, the Honorable Tania R. Vallejo, the Honorable Juliet Macaulay, and Professor Andrew Penner for an impactful look on closing the gap, for all women, in all places. Our April Book Club will be held on April 29 at Mimi’s Café in Tustin. Board Member Dana Heyde will be leading the discussion on Spare by Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. This will be a good one!

Happy New Year!

As we welcome in 2024, I am excited and to begin my term as your new OCWLA President! Thank you to those who attended our spectacular Holiday Party and Installation Dinner at the beautiful Lido House. Our newly-installed Board will hold its retreat this month, and is energized for the new year. We will continue to offer our members valuable networking opportunities, innovative educational programs, complimentary coffee meetups, and of course, our fabulous Annual Gala in the Fall. If you have any suggestions or feedback regarding events and/or programming that you would like to see this year, please feel free to email me directly at any time at cdjang@buchalter.com. I welcome your suggestions on how we can improve our offerings to our members.

We kick off the new year with several events. On January 18, 2024, the OCWLA will be well-represented with a full table at OCBA Judges’ Night at the Irvine Marriott. As one of the OCBA’s largest and most active affiliate bar associations, the OCWLA is a proud supporter of OCBA Judges’ Night, including its Franklin G. West Award Winner and OCWLA Member, Nikki Miliband!

On January 29, we will partner with the OCBA Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Committee to offer our first MCLE luncheon of the year: Path to Pro Bono: How to Understand and Connect with Diverse and Low Income Communities, which will be moderated by OCWLA Board Member Antoinette Naddour of Veterans Legal Institute. Please note that this MCLE qualifies for one hour legal ethics credit.

Last, but not least, on January 29 at 5:30 p.m., OCWLA Member Yvette Patko will lead the first Book Club of the year with a discussion on Ann Napolitano’s Hello Beautiful. Links to details about each of these events are below.

Happy Holidays OCWLA Members!

It is hard to believe that 2023 is coming to an end! I have been so honored to serve as the OCWLA President this year. Thank you for trusting in me to serve and lead this great organization. It has truly been an honor!

We had a busy and fun-filled 2023. This year we held our first Business Referral and Speed Networking event, which we plan to make an annual event. We held numerous MCLEs on a variety of topics from Navigating AI in the Practice of Law to our Annual Equal Pay Day MCLE. We partnered with a number of Affiliate Bar Organizations and held free coffee meetups to give our members an opportunity to connect and network. Our book club continued to meet monthly and has been going strong for eight years now.

Also, in partnership with the Unity Bar, we recommended four candidates to the bench who have been appointed. We also held our signature events, including our Annual Wine Tasting, our Membership Mixer, Past Presidents’ Tea, Women Judges Reception, where we had over 35 judges in attendance, and held our Annual Gala and Awards Dinner at the beautiful VEA Hotel.

Thank you to our members, the OCWLA Board, and our many Sponsors who helped make 2023 a great year! Last week we held our Annual Holiday Party and Installation Dinner where the 2024 Board of Directors, the 2024 Executive Officers, and the 2024 Foundation Board were sworn in. I want to personally welcome Caroline Djang as the 2024 President of the OCWLA. 2024 will be a great year under her leadership. I look forward to serving as the 2024 President of the OCWLA Foundation and on the Executive Committee as the Immediate Past President. I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season and a Happy New Year, and I hope to see you all soon at an event in the new year.

Thank you to everyone who came out for our 47th Annual Gala! We had a great turn out and it was a lovely evening honoring Kate Corrigan for Attorney of the Year, the Honorable Claudia J. Silbar for Judge of the Year, and the Orange County Bar Association for the Advancement of Women Award. The OCWLA and our Foundation collectively raised over $50,000 through sponsorships, the silent and live auctions, and through donations at the event. Thank you again for your ongoing support!

As a reminder, voting is happening right now for our 2024 Board of Officers and Directors! Please remember to vote online by November 8th. Our next MCLE, Ethics & Civility In Your Practice, will be held on Thursday, November 9th at Avenue of the Arts Hotel. Happy September OCWLA Members!

Thank you to everyone who came out to our Women Judges Reception last week and thank you to all the judges who attended and supported this great event. We had over 30 judges in attendance. One of the missions of the OCWLA is the advancement of women on the bench. Over the past year, from 2021 to 2022, there was around a 3% increase in women on the trial court in Orange County. While this is great news, women still only make up 35% of the judges on the trial court in Orange County. The California statewide percentage of women judges on the trial court is 39.7%. The 4th District Court of Appeal has 40.9% women justices and the statewide percentage of women justices on the Courts of Appeal is 42%. The California Supreme Court is 57.1% women.

While women have made substantial progress on the bench here in California and in Orange County, there is still much progress to be made. The OCWLA thanks the women judges who have helped advance women on the bench and within the legal profession, and thanks the many people who have supported them along the way.

Happy April OCWLA Members!

We are off to a busy and fun year so far! On March 2nd we held our Annual Wine Event at the Roof Bar at Old Vine Kitchen & Bar at the Camp and had an excellent turnout. We just kicked off April with our Annual Equal Pay Day MCLE. While Equal Pay Day for all women on average this year was March 14th, Black Women’s Equal Pay Day is September 21st, Latina Equal Pay Day is October 8th, and Native and Indigenous Women’s Equal Pay Day is November 30th. Thank you to our all-star panel, Lori Andrus, Shauna Madison, and Professor Andrew Penner for a very informative discussion on how the U.S. measures up in terms of pay equity for women, how women litigators are fighting for equal pay in the workplace, and for highlighting the continued disparities for equal pay for women of different ethnicities.

On Friday, April 14th we are doing Zumba with the Chapman Women Lawyers Association, which will be taught by The Honorable Erithe Smith. Please save the date for our quarterly free coffee meetup on May 5th from 8:15-10:00 a.m. at the Corner Bakery. I hope to see you there!

Happy Women's History Month

OCWLA Members!

Women’s History Month first began in 1978 in Santa Rosa, California when a task force was commissioned to address the status of women. The organizers selected the week of March 8th to correspond to International Women’s Day. The movement spread across the country. In 1980, President Carter issued the first Presidential Proclamation declaring the week of March 8th as National Women’s History Week. In 1987, Congress passed a law designating March as “Women’s History Month.”

Looking back on our history, Orange County Women Lawyers started in 1975 with 5 members. The original goal was to focus on the rights not only of women but also of all individual groups that may have experienced discrimination in our society or before the law. At the time, there were no women jurists sitting on the bench in Orange County. The group quickly grew to over 30 members. Since this time, OCWLA has been dedicated to the advancement of women in the legal profession and the support of diversity both on the bench and in law firm partnerships. Nearly 50 years later, today the OCWLA has over 500 members. While women have come a long way in the legal profession and on the bench, there is still much work to do.

Equal Pay Day this year is March 14th, which represents how far into the year women must work to be paid what men were paid the previous year. Women who work full-time are paid on average just 84% of what men are paid and for part-time work just 77%. These percentages are even lower for women of color.

Our Annual Equal Pay Day MCLE will be on April 7th. Learn how women litigators are fighting for equal pay in the workplace and how the U.S. stacks up in terms of pay equity for women. This will be a very informative event, so I hope to see you there.

Our board met this past Saturday for its annual retreat, and we had a great time planning this upcoming year! We have some great MCLE programs planned as well as a wide variety of fun networking events. We will also be doing a series entitled “Women Supporting Women” focusing on intentional networking and referrals so stay tuned for details soon.

Sleigh bells ring! Are you listening? I have said many times this year, that I am honored to be the 2022 Orange County Women Lawyers Association President, and it is especially true as I look back at this year. I am proud of all the OCWLA events, MCLEs, coffee meetups, and book clubs that brought us together. The Gala was a magical night where we were able to honor a few women who make positive impacts in the legal profession that benefit all of us. I am especially proud that an OCWLA Past President is now the Mayor of Anaheim! This year has shown just how amazing OCWLA is. Remembering Member Shauna Meryn Kossoff

It is with deep sorrow that we share the news of the recent passing of OCWLA Member Shauna Meryn Kossoff. Shauna passed after a long battle with glioblastoma. She is survived by her husband Matt and her son. Shauna was an attorney, a loving wife, and an amazing mother. Her greatest pleasures in life were exploration of the spirit and spending time with her friends, husband, and son. Shauna was a regular attendee of the OCWLA Book Club and will be missed by OCWLA. Book Club: Last month, our members-only Book Club got in the spooky spirit by reading the classic horror story The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde. This dark fantasy sparked plenty of discussion!

Coffee & Costumes: Our members started Halloween with Coffee & Costumes! This group takes the work out of networking! A fun time was had by all!

46th OCWLA Annual Gala: Join us at the OCWLA Annual Gala on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 to promote the advancement of women in the legal profession and support our awardees. Our program includes a hosted bar and champagne reception, a silent auction, and a gorgeous plated meal, all while experiencing the beauty of Shady Canyon Golf Club. Connect With Other Book Lovers: This month, our Book Club will focus on Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray. Fay Stender Award Reception: Orange County Women Lawyers Association is proud that our member and nominee Kimberly La Salle is this year’s recipient of the California Women Lawyers Fay Stender Award. The Fay Stender Award is given each year to a feminist attorney, who, like Fay Stender, is committed to the representation of women, disadvantaged groups, and unpopular causes, and whose courage, zest for life, and demonstrated ability to effect change as a single individual make her a role model for women attorneys. As summer comes to a close, I am reminded of the inspirational words of Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, “Despite the encouraging and wonderful gains and the changes for women which have occurred in my lifetime, there is still room to advance and to promote correction of the remaining deficiencies and imbalances.” I remain honored to be a part of OCWLA and to work alongside other women who share a vision for equality and advancement for women in the legal profession.

OCWLA is proud to partner with Community Legal Aid SoCal to support its Unlawful Detainer Answer Clinic on Tuesday September 20, 2022. This virtual clinic assists low-income tenants facing eviction during the COVID-19 pandemic. Volunteer attorneys will meet with clients virtually, and housing attorneys are available to provide real-time assistance for the duration of the clinic.

Happy (early) Fourth Of July!

As our country celebrates our freedom, it is important to recognize the reproductive freedoms that were taken away from women last month. Sometimes it seems that the fight for women’s equality is never done. Along with Sister Bars of Los Angeles and Allies, OCWLA issued a statement voicing our opposition to the egregious holding in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health. I am proud to be part of an organization that continues to work together to advance women everywhere.
