Message from OCWLA President Tracy Hughes

Wednesday, July 16, 2025 8:17 PM | Executive Director (Administrator)

Happy July to all our members!

I am happy to report that OCWLA has hit an all-time high in membership of 631 members. A shoutout to our very talented membership co-chairs, board members Laurie Rowan and Mimi Ahn, for so effectively conveying to prospective members the benefits of OCWLA membership. And special thanks to our existing members for your energy, enthusiasm, and support for women in the legal profession.

As we dive into mid-summer, we are excited to highlight new upcoming events for OCWLA members.

We will be celebrating the leaders who helped shape OCWLA into the organization it is today at our Past President’s Tea on July 19th. Don’t forget to wear a festive hat!

On August 8, two marketing specialists from powerhouse legal marketing firm Outlier Creative will join a small group (this will sell out, so register today!) to highlight best practices for marketing your legal skills. The Buchalter law firm will generously be hosting this event. Following the presentation the speakers will have individual short meetings with attendees to address questions about professional social media profiles and/or resumes. This is the second event in our Professional Tool Kit series, to help members maximize their career potential.

Suffrage Day is August 26th. We will be hosting an OCWLA coffee meet-up to celebrate our sisters who made voting and advocacy possible for American women. Look for more information in your email soon.

We will also be hosting a special MCLE luncheon on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Pacific Club. OCDA Prosecutor turned ABC Legal Commentator Matt Murphy will join former OCDA Homicide Prosecutor Heather Brown to discuss their prosecution of the infamous Hossein Nayeri. Both attorneys were featured in the recent Hulu documentary, “Devil in the Desert,” and in the ABC podcast of the same name which recently became the number one podcast in the country. Don’t miss this great MCLE!

A few other announcements:

We would like to continue to highlight pro bono opportunities for our members. Volunteering with OC pro bono organizations is a wonderful way to help community members in need, meet other talented attorneys, and acquire new skills. Some upcoming opportunities are listed below:

Upcoming Conservatorship Clinics at CHOC through the Elder Law and Disability Rights Center: July 19 and August 9, 2025

2025 Intake Clinics, Veterans Legal Institute: July 25, August 29, September 19, October 31, November 21, and December 19

Please contact these organizations to reserve your spot!

On a personal note, I have moved over to a new firm! See below.

Warmly,

Tracy Hughes
