When members of historically underrepresented communities see someone with a shared background serving in the judiciary, the bench becomes more accessible, the pathway becomes more visible, and the possibility of serving becomes more tangible.
Representation does not happen by chance. It requires mentorship, sponsorship, encouragement, and a community willing to create opportunities and open doors. Each of us has a role to play—not only by pursuing leadership ourselves, but also by recognizing potential in others, sharing opportunities, making introductions, and encouraging qualified women to take the next step.
August also provides additional opportunities to learn, connect, and reflect. I hope you will join us for our upcoming Women’s Suffrage Coffee, where we will recognize the courage and determination of the women who fought for the right to vote and consider how their work continues to inform our responsibility to participate, lead, and advocate today.
Please also be on the lookout for information about our upcoming CLE programs, which will provide opportunities for professional development and thoughtful discussion on issues affecting our members and the broader legal community. Finally, mark your calendars for OCWLA’s Annual Gala on October 15, when we will come together to celebrate excellence, service, and the individuals who continue to advance women within the legal profession.
